The "Open in Sidebar" extension offers a simple way to access the content of any website while reading. You can open any webpage in the sidebar view by clicking the action button or assigning a keyboard shortcut. Within the extension's sidebar interface, you can drop the desired link or use the built-in address bar by pasting the URL and pressing Enter. This dual-pane view empowers you to engage with online text editors, image editors, dictionaries, and other tools while having access to the main page. Furthermore, the extension allows you to reset the view and load new pages by inserting fresh URLs. To see the currently loaded URL, refer to the dedicated section within the integrated address bar.

FAQs

  1. What is the "Open in Sidebar" extension and how does it work?

This extension simplifies loading any web page within the integrated sidebar view. Click the action button or assign a keyboard shortcut to open the extension's interface. Drag and drop a link from the current tab into the sidebar view and wait for the page to load. You can view the original and loaded page side-by-side in a dual-pane layout. Whether you wish to load an online media player, a photo editor, or an online dictionary, this extension enables you to access these tools without navigating away from the original page. The extension includes an address bar located at the bottom of the view, allowing you to identify the currently loaded URL. Additionally, you can reset the view by clicking the home button, or if you want to load a new URL, paste it into the address bar and press Enter.

  3. How can I open the sidebar view without pressing the action button?

To assign a new keyboard shortcut for the extension, follow these steps:

    • Open a new tab in your Google Chrome browser.
    • In the address bar, type "chrome://extensions/shortcuts" and press Enter. This will take you to the Keyboard Shortcuts page for Chrome extensions.
    • Scroll down or search for the "Open in Sidebar" extension in the list of installed extensions.
    • Click the "Type a shortcut" box next to the extension's name.
    • Press the desired keyboard combination you want to assign as the shortcut for the extension.
    • After pressing the keyboard combination, it will be automatically filled in the "Type a shortcut" box.
    • Click outside the box or press Enter to save the new keyboard shortcut.

Once saved, you can now use the assigned keyboard combination to open the sidebar view of the "Open in Sidebar" extension whenever you want.

  4. Can I open any page in the sidebar view?

This extension enables the loading of webpages within an HTML iframe element, bypassing the default restriction set by the "X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN" header. By removing this header, the extension grants permission for the requested page to be loaded within the iframe view. However, it's important to note that certain secure websites employ an additional security measure known as the "Content-Security-Policy: frame-ancestors" header. The extension does not support this feature yet. Therefore, you may encounter problems when loading pages with CSP headers set.

  5. Is it possible to run a user script on pages that load in the side panel?

Starting from version 0.1.1, you can employ a custom JavaScript using the options page to execute on side panel loaded pages. To restrict the script to specific page origins, you can use an if statement with "location.href" or "location.hostname" matching. By doing so, you can have various scripts for different scopes. Additionally, it's possible to modify the page's CSS by creating a "style" element and assigning your styling code as the text content of this element.

  6. How do I open the current page in the side panel?

Starting from Chrome 106, you'll find a context menu item when you right-click on links or pages. Use this option to move the current page or the selected link to the side panel. Once selected, the extension will automatically open the side panel and load the page for you. If the side panel is already open, it will navigate to the new destination.
